A message for AWOL/UA Servicemembers
If you already are are AWOL/UA, we highly recommend you read the cover article in this issue of MLTF’s On Watch from Jan. 2009, then call a GI Rights Hotline — ours or one near you — and work with the counselor to find the best way to deal with your situation.
It is NOT hopeless, and you do have options. In many cases a counselor can help you get out of the military based on the circumstances that led you to go AWOL in the first place. In some cases you may need a lawyer, and we can make a referral, but in either case, you are not alone. There’s help a phone call away.
Be wary of taking advice from concerned but uninformed friends or family members. And beware of some Websites that ask you to pay for advice. The regulations that direct the actions of the military in AWOL/UA are free for anyone to read; our counselors are familiar with them or can look up the info or ask another counselor with more experience — all of which costs you nothing.
